An Open When Letter

Open When You Need Encouragement

For the day they forget who they actually are.

Encouragement from a person who knows you specifically beats encouragement from anyone else, by a lot. The pep talk on Instagram is built for nobody. A letter is built for one person, and the person reading it knows it.

Write yours when they are doing well, while you can see them clearly. We mail it on the date you pick — the week of a big audition, the month they start over, the day you know they will be tempted to give up.

Suggested Prompts

What to put inside

Pick one or two. The letter does not need to cover everything. It just needs to be specific.

  • A specific past moment where they did the hard thing
  • The one thing about them you have always believed in, even when they did not
  • The reason this is worth it — in your words, not theirs
  • Three small things they can do today to feel one degree braver
  • Permission to be scared and do it anyway

Frequently Asked

The short version

What is an open-when letter?

A sealed letter labeled with the moment it should be opened — “Open when you miss me”, “Open when you can't sleep”. The tradition started in military families; the format is now used by everyone in any long-distance or high-stress relationship.

How does delivery work?

You write the letter (digital $9 or handwritten $19), pick a future date one month to two years out, and we mail it on the morning of that date. Real envelope, real wax seal, US mail.

Is this for a friend or a partner?

Either. Plenty of friends send these to each other for big jobs, big moves, big medical news. Parents send them to kids before exams. Couples send them across the toughest months of a marriage.

How long should it be?

One page is the sweet spot. Long enough to say something real, short enough to fit on the kitchen counter without intimidating them.
