An Open When Letter

Open When You Graduate

From who they were freshman year, to who they are about to become.

The strongest version of this letter is the one written by a younger version of the same person. Freshman year you, sending a letter to senior year you. The four-year gap does the work that a 30-year-old looking back at 22 cannot.

Write the letter at the start of the program — freshman year, first semester, day one. We hold it for up to two years and mail it on graduation morning. They open it in their robe.

Suggested Prompts

What to put inside

Pick one or two. The letter does not need to cover everything. It just needs to be specific.

  • What you (the freshman) thought college was going to be like
  • What you (the freshman) were most afraid of about it
  • Who you (the freshman) wanted to become by graduation
  • Three things you (the freshman) hope you (the graduate) do not forget
  • Permission to not have figured out the next step yet

Frequently Asked

The short version

What is an open-when letter?

A sealed letter labeled with the moment it should be opened — “Open when you miss me”, “Open when you can't sleep”. The tradition started in military families; the format is now used by everyone in any long-distance or high-stress relationship.

How does delivery work?

You write the letter (digital $9 or handwritten $19), pick a future date one month to two years out, and we mail it on the morning of that date. Real envelope, real wax seal, US mail.

How far in advance can I write this?

Up to two years. So for graduation in May 2027, you could write this no earlier than May 2025. That timing works perfectly for the first-day-of-junior-year-to-graduation arc.

Can a parent write this version too?

Of course. The parent version is great as well — written when the kid started high school or college, opened on graduation. Both letters can be sent (separate orders), one from past-self, one from parent.
