For the kid who acts ready and is not.
Move-in day is loud and confusing and built to be photographed. The actual transition happens around 10 PM that night, when the parents have driven home, the roommate is asleep, and the kid sits on a stranger's bed and realizes this is where they live now.
Write the letter from inside the bedroom they are leaving. Tell them the specific things. We mail it the morning of move-in — or if you prefer, the second night, when the real homesickness hits.

What is an open-when letter?
A sealed letter labeled with the moment it should be opened — “Open when you miss me”, “Open when you can't sleep”. The tradition started in military families; the format is now used by everyone in any long-distance or high-stress relationship.
How does delivery work?
You write the letter (digital $9 or handwritten $19), pick a future date one month to two years out, and we mail it on the morning of that date. Real envelope, real wax seal, US mail.
Should I send this to my kid's dorm?
Yes — mail it to their on-campus residence hall address. We will not include a return address that gives away who sent it (so the surprise is intact), unless you want one.
What if the move-in date changes?
Email support before your scheduled mail date and we'll update it. Most universities post move-in dates by April; order in summer once you know the exact day.
