An Open When Letter
Open When You Need a Pep Talk
For the morning before the audition, the interview, the surgery.
Pep talks are usually delivered in person, two minutes before, and forgotten by the time they walk through the door. A letter version of a pep talk is the one they can re-read in the bathroom right before, in their own quiet.
Write the letter from somewhere you both consider a safe spot. Make it specific. We mail it the morning of — the audition, the interview, the wedding, the surgery. They open it before the door opens.

What to put inside
Pick one or two. The letter does not need to cover everything. It just needs to be specific.
- — What you would say to them in the elevator on the way up
- — The phrase you have heard them say a thousand times that you want them to remember today
- — A reminder that no one in the room has done their homework like they have
- — Permission to be scared, and to do it anyway
- — The plan for celebrating after, regardless of outcome

Frequently Asked
The short version
What is an open-when letter?
A sealed letter labeled with the moment it should be opened — “Open when you miss me”, “Open when you can't sleep”. The tradition started in military families; the format is now used by everyone in any long-distance or high-stress relationship.
How does delivery work?
You write the letter (digital $9 or handwritten $19), pick a future date one month to two years out, and we mail it on the morning of that date. Real envelope, real wax seal, US mail.
What is the best delivery timing?
Mail date set for 2-3 days before the big event, so it arrives the morning of (or the night before, depending on USPS). For exact-morning arrival, schedule it for 3-5 days before.
Should I tell them I sent it?
Up to you. Most people tell the recipient that something is in the mail for that day, without saying what. The surprise of the specific letter is the gift; the surprise of getting any letter at all is just delivery anxiety.
