An Open When Letter
Open When You're Deployed
For the year that does not pass like a year.
Deployment is the original use case for open-when letters — the format was born in military families. The reason it works is that deployment time moves differently. The letter you wrote in March, opened in October, feels like a postcard from a previous lifetime.
Write yours from inside the house they are leaving. Describe the rooms, the dog, the weather, the chores you are not going to finish. We mail it on the date you pick during their deployment. Anywhere from one month to two years out.

What to put inside
Pick one or two. The letter does not need to cover everything. It just needs to be specific.
- — What the house sounds like at 7 PM
- — What the kids said today that they would have laughed at
- — Three things waiting for them to come home and do
- — What you are eating, watching, reading without them
- — Permission to feel the weight without minimizing it

Frequently Asked
The short version
What is an open-when letter?
A sealed letter labeled with the moment it should be opened — “Open when you miss me”, “Open when you can't sleep”. The tradition started in military families; the format is now used by everyone in any long-distance or high-stress relationship.
How does delivery work?
You write the letter (digital $9 or handwritten $19), pick a future date one month to two years out, and we mail it on the morning of that date. Real envelope, real wax seal, US mail.
Can we send this to an APO/FPO address?
Yes. USPS handles APO/FPO mail; transit time is longer (1-3 weeks). When ordering, enter the APO/FPO address in the recipient form. Set your delivery date a few weeks earlier than you want it to arrive in-theater.
Should I send multiple letters across the deployment?
Many military families do exactly that — an open-when pack: open when you miss home, open when finals (for spouse), open when you cannot sleep, open when the deployment is halfway done. Each is a separate order.
