An Open When Letter
Open When You're Having a Bad Day
For the day that does not need analysis, just company.
A bad day usually does not have a single cause. It is the slow accumulation of small wrongs — the spilled coffee, the missed call, the email tone that was probably nothing. A letter is the only response that does not try to diagnose anything.
Write yours on a day you are full of how much you love them. We mail it on the date you choose — the start of a known hard month, the week after a loss, the morning after the bad news.

What to put inside
Pick one or two. The letter does not need to cover everything. It just needs to be specific.
- — Permission to be in a bad mood, with no obligation to fix it today
- — A specific tiny thing that helps you when you are having a bad day
- — What you love about them that is true regardless of mood
- — Three things you would say if you were on the phone right now
- — The promise that tomorrow is its own day

Frequently Asked
The short version
What is an open-when letter?
A sealed letter labeled with the moment it should be opened — “Open when you miss me”, “Open when you can't sleep”. The tradition started in military families; the format is now used by everyone in any long-distance or high-stress relationship.
How does delivery work?
You write the letter (digital $9 or handwritten $19), pick a future date one month to two years out, and we mail it on the morning of that date. Real envelope, real wax seal, US mail.
When does this letter actually help?
It helps most when received on a day that was not catastrophic but is unmanageable. The little-bad-days are when most of us actually struggle, and they are also the days when no one thinks to send help.
What if their bad day is months away?
Up to two years away is fine. Many people set this for the start of grief anniversaries, the first month back at work after parental leave, or the period of the year they have always struggled with.
