An Open When Letter

Open When It's Your Birthday

The card replacement that actually means something.

Birthday cards are the most disposable letters in existence. The thing in your hand for forty seconds, then in the trash. The reason is that they are written for nobody specific.

An “Open When It's Your Birthday” letter is the opposite. Written for one person, sealed in advance, mailed to arrive on the morning of. We mail it on the date you set. They open it before the candles, not after.

Frequently Asked

The short version

What is an open-when letter?

A sealed letter labeled with the moment it should be opened — “Open when you miss me”, “Open when you can't sleep”. The tradition started in military families; the format is now used by everyone in any long-distance or high-stress relationship.

How does delivery work?

You write the letter (digital $9 or handwritten $19), pick a future date one month to two years out, and we mail it on the morning of that date. Real envelope, real wax seal, US mail.

Can this arrive exactly on the birthday?

We mail it the morning of your chosen date. USPS first-class delivery is usually 1-5 days, so for exact-day arrival, set your mail date 3-5 days before the actual birthday. If they live in your city, 1-2 days is usually enough.

How is this different from a regular birthday card?

A card is bought, signed, and mailed by you the week before. This letter is written months or even a year in advance, when the moment was bigger than the card. The lag is what makes it land.
