An Open When Letter
Open When You're Sad
For the kind of sad that is not a crisis, just an afternoon.
Most sadness is not a crisis. It is a quiet Tuesday where everything is fine and you still cannot move. A letter that arrives on that Tuesday is different from a text in a way that is hard to explain unless you have received one.
Write the letter on a day you feel close to them. We mail it on the date you choose. They will open it when their day already does not have room for one more uplifting thing — and they will read it anyway.
Suggested Prompts
What to put inside
Pick one or two. The letter does not need to cover everything. It just needs to be specific.
- — What you love about them that has nothing to do with being productive
- — A memory of a day when nothing went right and they were still themselves
- — Permission to do nothing today and not feel guilty about it
- — A tiny thing they could do right now that would help even a little
- — Your phone number, in case the letter is not enough

Frequently Asked
The short version
What is an open-when letter?
A sealed letter labeled with the moment it should be opened — “Open when you miss me”, “Open when you can't sleep”. The tradition started in military families; the format is now used by everyone in any long-distance or high-stress relationship.
How does delivery work?
You write the letter (digital $9 or handwritten $19), pick a future date one month to two years out, and we mail it on the morning of that date. Real envelope, real wax seal, US mail.
Is this appropriate to send to someone going through depression?
It can be — used carefully. A letter does not replace therapy, medication, or a phone call from someone trained. But many people find that knowing a specific letter is in the world, for a specific bad day, helps. If you are unsure, write it and ask them when they would want it delivered.
Should the envelope literally say 'Open When You're Sad'?
That is the whole tradition. We will write whatever you ask on the envelope, or in your handwriting if you are sending it handwritten. The label is part of what makes the letter work.
