A First Day of School Letter

Sealed today. Tucked in their backpack for the morning.

The first day is the loudest morning of the school year — the outfit, the photo on the porch, the new backpack. The kid is performing brave. A letter in the backpack, opened at lunch on their own, is the only thing in the room that is just for them.

Order in late July. We mail to arrive in late August.

By Grade

What to write at each age

Kindergarten

Reassurance. “You are brave. I will be at the door at 3 PM. I love you whether today was great or weird.”

Elementary

Specifics from summer. Acknowledgment of how they grew. A line about what you are excited about.

Middle / High School

Identity. The kids who matter will find you. The lunch table is not a referendum on your worth.

College

Homesickness pre-emptive. The first weeks will be loud and lonely; that is normal and it passes by week three.

Frequently Asked

What grade is this letter best for?

All of them, with different tones. Kindergarten letters are about reassurance (“you are brave and I will be here at 3 PM”). Middle and high school letters are about identity (“the kids who matter will find you”). College letters are the homesickness pre-emptive. Pick the grade, pick the tone.

Should I have it arrive ON the first day or before?

Before. Order in late July, set the mail date for the second-to-last week of August. The letter arrives in the mail a few days before the first day, and you can tuck it into the backpack or hand it to them at breakfast that morning. Last-minute delivery is too risky — USPS averages 1-5 days.

What should I write?

What you remember about their last summer, what you noticed about how they grew this year, what you are excited about for them, permission to come home and tell you the day was bad if it was. Keep it short — they are going to have it open at recess.

Should this be from one parent or both?

One letter per parent is the strongest version. Each is its own $9 (digital) or $19 (handwritten) order. They open one at breakfast and one at the lunch table.
