✨ Mother's Day Letters

A Mother's Day Letter β€” The Gift That Arrives After the Flowers Wilt

Write a handwritten or digital letter to your mom this Mother's Day. We'll deliver it on next year's Mother's Day β€” so the most meaningful gift of the year keeps landing year after year.

Why This Works

Mother's Day is famously the one day a year we all try to say what our moms have meant to us, and just as famously, it's the day we don't quite pull it off. The flowers go in a vase. The card gets read once and tucked somewhere. Brunch ends. By Tuesday, the whole weekend feels like it happened to someone else. Your mom, who has kept every crayon drawing you ever made, walks away from another Mother's Day with another thing that will fade. That's not really her fault, or yours. It's just what the day is when the gifts are the kind that don't last.

A letter is the gift that doesn't fade. You sit down this Mother's Day β€” or the days around it, while she's still on your mind β€” and you write her something real. Not a card, not a text, not an Instagram post. A full, unhurried letter. The specific memories you hope she hasn't forgotten. The way you catch yourself using her phrases, doing her things. What you understand now that you didn't when you were growing up. Then you mail it in (handwritten) or submit it here (digital), and one year later β€” on the next Mother's Day morning β€” it arrives in her mailbox or inbox.

She opens it, and for the whole day the letter is the thing. She re-reads it. She shows it to your dad, or her sister, or a friend. She ends up putting it in the same drawer where she kept your childhood report cards, because that's what moms do with the things they love. A year from now she's different. You're different. Your relationship has moved forward. And the letter is a fixed point β€” proof, in your actual words or handwriting, that on one specific Mother's Day you paused and said the whole thing out loud. Done yearly, this becomes a tradition she ends up looking forward to more than the brunch.

Questions Worth Answering

Everything you need to know, answered plainly.

What happens to my letter if Hold My Letter goes out of business?
Your memories are safe no matter what. If our operations ever cease, every single stored letter is immediately mailed back to the return address provided by the sender. Your letter will always reach you.
What if I move before my letter is delivered?
No problem at all. Just email us your new address anytime before your delivery date and we'll update it. Your letter follows you wherever you go.
How do you store the letters?
Letters are stored in climate-controlled, fireproof safes β€” not filing cabinets or boxes. We treat every letter as irreplaceable, because to someone, it is.
When do I need to send my letter in by to make this Mother's Day?
For a handwritten letter to be stored and delivered on next Mother's Day, we need it in hand at least 11 months before the target delivery date. For digital letters, you can order up to the Mother's Day itself β€” we hold it for exactly one year from the date you pick.
What if my mom has passed away?
Many of our customers write Mother's Day letters to moms who are no longer here and have us deliver the letter back to themselves on Mother's Day. It becomes a private ritual β€” a place to say the things you wish you had, in your own handwriting or typed.
Can all the siblings write letters for the same Mother's Day?
Yes β€” and it's one of the most emotional Mother's Days we've seen. Each sibling orders separately, and we deliver them to arrive together. A small stack of handwritten or printed letters from her children on the same morning.
