Father's Day is its own genre. Ties. Grill accessories. Golf balls. The same five gifts in rotation for most of your adult life, usually chosen under mild duress because dads are famously hard to shop for and also because most of us never quite know how to thank him out loud. The things most of us want to say to our fathers come out sideways — in the way we show up at his birthday, in how we fix the car together, in the call home you make every few weeks without really knowing why. The actual words rarely land.

A letter lands. You sit down this Father's Day and you write to him the way you can't say it in the kitchen. The things you've been meaning to tell him. What you remember about growing up that you didn't understand at the time. The specific thing he taught you that you still do. The version of him you watch now, older, and are quietly proud to have. The things you hope he knows. Then you seal it (or submit it) and we hold it until next Father's Day morning, when it arrives in his mailbox or inbox a year later.

He'll open it wherever he is — the garage, the recliner, the kitchen table with his coffee. He'll read it twice, slowly the second time. He'll do what dads do with gifts that hit: put it somewhere safe without saying much about it, and come back to it alone across the next year. A tie he'll forget he owns. A letter that says everything you've been meaning to say for most of your life — in your actual handwriting or your real voice — that one, he'll keep.
