A Baby Shower Time Capsule

Sealed Letters for the Baby Who Isn't Here Yet

The shower activity that arrives, in the mail, one year later.

Most baby shower activities end up in the garbage by Tuesday. A baby shower time capsule does not — each guest writes a real letter to the baby (or the parents), seals it, and we mail them back one at a time across the baby's first birthday weeks.

A year from now, the parents are exhausted, the kid is one, and a letter from before-the-baby-was-born shows up in the mail.

What Guests Can Write

Prompts for the shower station

To the Baby

  • — What the world looked like the year you were born
  • — A song that was popular in your first year
  • — What I want you to know about your parents that they will never tell you
  • — What your parents were like before you
  • — A piece of advice for when you turn 12

To the Parents

  • — The thing no one warned you about that I want to
  • — What you are going to be great at as parents
  • — Permission to be a worse housekeeper this year
  • — A specific reason this baby got lucky with you two
  • — The phone number you should call when you need to vent

Frequently Asked

For hosts and parents-to-be

How does this work for a baby shower with 20 guests?

Set up a writing station at the shower with our prompt cards and envelopes. Each guest writes a letter to the baby (or to the parents-to-be) and seals it. The host mails the stack to us afterward. Each letter is a separate $19 handwritten order, mailed back on the baby's first or second birthday.

Should the letters be to the baby or to the parents?

Both work, and many showers do a mix. Letters to the baby get opened years later (the baby reads them at 5, 10, 18). Letters to the parents work like a parenting-support time capsule — words for the hardest weeks of year one or two.

What's the best delivery date?

First birthday is the most common (about 12-14 months after the shower, well within our 2-year window). Some hosts pick the parents' first Mother's Day or Father's Day, or the baby's adoption anniversary if adopting.

What if the baby is born early or late?

Email support after the birth and we'll adjust the delivery date to the actual birthday, no charge.
