Why This Works

Parenting a teenager is a particular kind of humbling. You raised this person from the beginning, and now they're slamming doors at you, taking advice from strangers on the internet, and forming opinions about you they won't share for a decade. It's the phase of parenting that's the hardest to get emotional communication through. They don't want to hear it from you right now. They'll want to hear it later, but right now the door is closed.

A letter bypasses that. You sit down and you write to your teenager what you can't say at the dinner table without them rolling their eyes. What you admire about who they're becoming. The thing you wish you'd known at their age. The version of them you see that they don't see yet. What you hope they remember about themselves when the noise gets loud. You seal the letter, we hold it, and on a future date — their next birthday, graduation, college move-in day — it arrives in the mail.

By the time they read it, they're a slightly different person than the one who was slamming the door when you wrote it. The letter lands differently than it would have if you'd tried to say it in the car. It's permanent. It's in your handwriting. It doesn't demand a response. They can read it once, set it down, come back to it. Some will read it and not say anything for a long time, then bring it up years later. Some will keep it for decades.
