After enough years of marriage, the important things get said in shorthand. A look across the kitchen. The way you sit next to each other on hard days. Then you seal it, you mail it to us, and on whatever date you choose — your next anniversary, his birthday, a random Tuesday you know will be hard — it lands in the mailbox. He reads it in your handwriting, and he gets something husbands rarely get: a full, unhurried letter from his wife, preserved exactly, that he can hold in his hands. He'll read it more than once. Years later, it'll still be in a drawer somewhere, because no matter how much life has happened since you wrote it, the letter is still his.
