Recovery Milestones

A Letter for 5 Years Sober

A letter to your sober self at the five-year mark — written from the version of you who got there.

Why This Works

Five years sober is the threshold most people in long-term recovery describe as the real transition. The year-one fight is over. The boring middle years are behind you. By year five, the identity has shifted from ‘sober alcoholic’ to something quieter and more permanent. A letter written at year three or four, opened on the morning of year five, is a particular kind of evidence: a letter from before-you-believed-you-would-make-it.

Write the letter when you can. We seal it and mail on the exact five-year sobriety date. The version of you who reads it is on the other side of the work the letter described.

If you are currently writing from year three or four, you are well within our two-year delivery window. If you are earlier, set the date for as close to five years as our cap allows.

Questions Worth Answering

Everything you need to know, answered plainly.

What happens to my letter if Hold My Letter goes out of business?
Your memories are safe no matter what. If our operations ever cease, every single stored letter is immediately mailed back to the return address provided by the sender. Your letter will always reach you.
What if I move before my letter is delivered?
No problem at all. Just email us your new address anytime before your delivery date and we'll update it. Your letter follows you wherever you go.
How do you store the letters?
Letters are stored in climate-controlled, fire-resistant safes — not filing cabinets or boxes. We treat every letter as irreplaceable, because to someone, it is.
What should this letter say?
What recovery looked like from inside the years you were writing in. What you were afraid of. The specific small thing that worked when nothing else did. What you wanted year-five-you to know about who you were before.
Is this part of an AA or program tradition?
Many recovery programs encourage some version of letter writing — to your past self, your future self, your higher power. We do not affiliate with any program, but the practice is widely recognized as useful in long-term recovery.
