Personal Manifestos

A Personal Manifesto — Write What You Believe

Write down what you actually believe. We deliver it back to you on the date you choose — a yearly check-in with the person you say you are.

Why This Works

Most of our beliefs go un-examined. We absorb them from the families we grew up in, the people we admired in our twenties, the books we read at the right time. We don't usually sit down and write them out as a coherent thing. And then we live, often unconsciously, by what those beliefs would dictate — or worse, we drift away from them without noticing because we never wrote them down clearly enough to track when they changed.

A personal manifesto is the act of writing down, in your own words, what you actually believe. About work. About love. About money. About how to treat people. About what you owe the world and what you owe yourself. About what you want your life to be in service of. It's not a vision board. It's not goals. It's the underlying operating principles your decisions get made by, written out so you can see them.

Then we deliver the manifesto back to you on the date you set — one year, three years, ten. The version of you who reads it can immediately see what's still true, what's drifted, and what has been quietly replaced by something else. People who do this once tend to do it every year. It becomes a personal audit no other practice quite delivers. The cost is one focused afternoon. The clarity is structural.

Questions Worth Answering

Everything you need to know, answered plainly.

What happens to my letter if Hold My Letter goes out of business?
Your memories are safe no matter what. If our operations ever cease, every single stored letter is immediately mailed back to the return address provided by the sender. Your letter will always reach you.
What if I move before my letter is delivered?
No problem at all. Just email us your new address anytime before your delivery date and we'll update it. Your letter follows you wherever you go.
How do you store the letters?
Letters are stored in climate-controlled, fire-resistant safes — not filing cabinets or boxes. We treat every letter as irreplaceable, because to someone, it is.
What should a manifesto include?
Whatever you'd want to be reminded of. Common sections: how you want to spend your time, what you owe the people closest to you, your relationship to money, your relationship to work, the kind of person you're trying to become, what success means to you, what failure would mean. Write the version that's honest, not the version that's impressive.
Is this the same as a goal letter?
No — goals are outcomes; a manifesto is principles. Most people do both: a manifesto for the underlying values, plus shorter goal letters for specific outcomes downstream of those values.
Should I share it with anyone?
Optional. Some couples write manifestos and share them with each other as a relationship check-in. Most people keep theirs private. Either is valid.
